Exercise One:

Think about the vision that you have for your playing for a few minutes.How would you like to play
in ten years time. Make it exact!

Once you've done that, brainstorm as many things that you need to practice in order to play like
your vision. What specific things do you need to learn, develop and practice? Write them down now.

Exercise Two:

Next to each of the things written down for Exercise One, write down a category next to it. For
example, if you wrote "I need to be able to play faster" then write technique next to it.
If you feel that something you wrote belongs to more than one category, then write
down all the categories it could belong to.

Exercise Three:

Look at your answers for the previous two exercises. Once you've done that prioritise
the categories shown below. For example, if you feel that technique is the most
important thing you need to work on to reach your vision then put a 1 next to it.

start with the metronome at 80 beats per minute (bpm) and increase it by 4 bpm daily
(as long as I can play it perfectly).

Ear Training: I will invest 10 minutes daily a day on A minor pentatonic ear training
exercise one.

Got the idea? You would have one specific activity for every practice area. If you
have a lot of time to practice you could set more than one activity per practice area.

Acoustic Guitars - Variations On A Theme

An acoustic guitar does not have any electronic means of producing its sound. The music that comes out of it is a matter between the guitar and its player. Actually, once upon a time, all guitars were acoustic. Nowadays they need to be distinguished from electric guitars and acoustic guitars that have pickups in them to provide electronic means of amplification.

To the beginner guitar player it could be a surprise that there is an enormous range of sizes, shapes and materials in acoustic guitars. To most acoustic guitar players who only play popular music, the main distinction is between nylon string and steel string acoustic guitars. Within the classification of acoustic guitars there's the Baroque guitar, the classical guitar, the Renaissance guitar, the archtop guitar, the flamenco guitar and the twelve string guitar.

The classical guitar is the basic model for the acoustic guitar. Even though steel string acoustic guitars have been developed with a cutaway body to help the guitarist reach the high notes, the classical guitar retains the standard shape which was more or less decided upon a couple of hundred years ago. Classical guitar players use their fingers to pluck and strum the strings, growing the nails on their right hands slightly longer than the nails on the left hand. Although it's called a classical guitar, many guitarists from many genres have been seduced by the tone of the nylon string guitar. As a result you can find the nylon string sound in jazz, pop, folk or even blues music.

The flamenco guitar looks similar to a classical guitar but is lighter in color and weight. The flamenco guitar is traditionally much brighter in sound than the classical guitar even though in recent years many flamenco guitarists have been playing instruments with a more mellow sound similar to the classical guitar. A distinguishing characteristic of the flamenco guitar is the tapping plate which is a piece of white or transparent plastic attached to the body of the guitar just below the sound hole. You will sometimes find flamenco guitars that are fitted with wooden tuning pegs instead of machine heads. All guitars had these kind of tuning pegs once but now they are only retained because some flamenco guitarists prefers them because they keep the weight of the guitar to a minimum.

The twelve string guitar has six courses of strings, and it produces a much more complex sound than the six string. The twelve string guitar is made for strumming rather than picking or plucking because the individual courses do not easily lend themselves to single note playing. The twelve string has proved to be very attractive for guitarists who enjoyed experimenting with open tunings. Back in the 70s the image of Jimmy Page playing his double neck guitar was a rock 'n roll icon. One neck was fitted with twelve strings which allowed him to move between six and twelve string guitar for different effects.

Efforts to make the guitar heard above other instruments in jazz bands of the early twentieth century resulted not only in the production of the electric guitar, but also the resonator guitar. In the resonator guitar the sound is produced by metal cones instead of by the wooden body of the guitar. The resonator did not help much with amplification but its distinctive sound has made it a favorite with bluegrass and blues players.

Learning To Play Guitar Through Books, Videos And Software

Like for many out there who wants to learn to play the guitar, my journey towards learning the guitar had many ups and downs. I had took formal classes at $20 an hour. In addition, I was doing a group classical lesson too. While this method appears to be the best and easiest way ever to master the guitar, I found it really expensive and needed a lot of passion for guitar in order to be disciplined and sit down to practice. Furthermore, I was still a student. I had to think about my sports, studies and such. So, it was almost impossible to commit myself to a weekly class. Although, I actually did it, somehow, someway. I purchased the latest books, videos, and online software as well as software which were beneficial to me.

By using each of these different delivery methods I learned a bit, and am able to play many basic tunes on the guitar. Of course, I felt that some were useless, and some were good. This article contains opinions that are mine and may be or may not be similar to yours. So why talk further?

I still remember vividly that tuning the guitar in standard tuning was one of the toughest things to do! Still unable to do it for months, I actually practice on a wrong tuned guitar! Another major problem was playing chords. Even if you had not encountered any problems with this, the teaching of playing guitar is difficult to talk about on plain paper.

I fell in love with metal. I was listening to Trivium and found the guitar sound do beautiful that I decided that I wanted to be like them! I knew that I would take as much time as I could just to learn the songs and jam at a jamming studio because that was all that I wanted. I thought it would be real cool to play some flicks for a few of my friends whenever I meet them. This was when I started to look for ways to learn guitar. The Internet was not really good with lessons and such as it is today so I went to the music school and bookshops and bought a few musical books. It covered a little about music theory. What it failed to do was teaching me how to play! This was went all the problem started.

Another problem was actually reading the music. How did I know even know that I was playing the notes right? It was presented poorly in a horrifying manner which bores you to death. There was no one to correct me. You could just tricked yourself and say that you are right, when you are wrong. The biggest problem with the book method for me was a lack of easy diagram that showed me how the fingers were supposed to be and how the notes, bending and such were supposed to be like. Later on, many good books came with audio disc which could allow you to check if you played the notes right. This was a good improvement and help for everyone, without a doubt. Tuning was became much easier especially when electric tuners became cheaper, and I could listen to what the songs I was learning were supposed to sound like. However, problems still stayed after the introduction of the audio disc. I still felt that books are not the best method for learning to play guitar.

Then, I tried the videos. I could see and hear what the instructor was teaching. It was as though I had actually hired a teacher. Video close ups answered many of my questions on hand position and the nature of guitar playing. I was actually able to learn from the instructor and actually play some cool flicks. I found the rewind function very useful. I used it few hundreds of times to master difficult parts which I could not play in one whole short. However this method proved to be quite frustrating. The first was of course getting sick of it. You probably rewind it about 20times and there goes it, you get sick of it! The problem that I did not like the most was that you only learned to play songs that are on the tape. You will not be taught to play the songs you desire. At times, I would find this wasting of time because you are learning songs Another problem was the camera views of the clip. Some videos had lousy camera angles which could not let you see what the instructor is doing.

Now, on to the hottest way: Online software! Technology nowadays gives us the ability to purchase e-courses that allow you to learn at home, instead of wasting time going to music schools. It takes advantage of the tabs that are available free on the internet. This course overcomes the disadvantages of books and videos because it is dynamic. The software can also help you learn through fun means, instead of boring means. This is a cut over the other methods in my opinion. The main benefit with this method, and with this course in particular is that it is more interactive, interesting and engaging!

So what are the bad sides? The software will appeal to only some people. If they do not appeal to your likings, much of the content will be wasted. I have come across many bands/artists that many have tried to teach me although I am not interested. I still believe that online software is the best way to go to learn to play guitar. The interactive benefits are excellent. This is also a very easy way to learn!

How To String A Classical Guitar

When changing the strings on a classical guitar it is best to change one string at a time. It is not good for the neck of the guitar to have a sudden release of tension and then to have it applied forcefully later. This can lead to distortion of the neck and permanent damage.

As well as this, never tune the string more than a tone above its normal pitch. You can tune it a little sharp (for example, one semitone above normal concert pitch) as this can make the guitar a little ‘brighter’ to play. Tune it any higher and you risk breakage.

Never put steel strings on a classical guitar. It is not constructed to take this exertion and it is easily damaged (the neck can break away from the body).

To string the guitar: - Unwind the old string until the tension is completely released and the string is quite floppy - Unthread the string from the Capstan in the Headstock - Next untie if from the bridge and discard it

You’re now ready to string the guitar: - Start by slipping the string through the corresponding hole in the bridge from the sound hole end - Leave approximately 1½ inches of the string sticking out past the back of the bridge - Pull the extra string length towards the sound hole and loop it around the string where it originally entered the bridge - Loop the string under and over itself on top of the bridge twice. This forms a figure 8.

- Pull the string tightly away from the sound hole and attach it to the tuning peg as shown below

- Loop the string at the peg head and then twist it around itself before tightening the peg

- Continue to restring the other strings one by one using the above method

After all the strings are restrung, start to tune the strings by starting with the first E treble string. Use the tuning fork to get the A note on the 5th fret. You can tune the other strings from this.

There is another way of securing the string to the bridge. This is called the Letter D method. This is usually used only for the 4th, 5th and 6th strings and is done as follows: - Start as you would with the figure 8 by passing the string through the bridge at the sound hole and leaving 1½ inches sticking out - Bring the extra string length back and loop around itself then under and over itself ONCE at the very back of the bridge forming the letter D

Supposedly, the figure 8 is better since it has more holding power.

Some things to take note of while restringing and tuning: - Nylon strings, especially trebles, are very stretchy. On the first day they will seem to be never in tune but will stabilize the next day - Don’t stretch the strings when restringing since this make them develop thin areas. Uneven strings do not play in tune - Most intonation problems are due to uneven strings - Experiment to find the string that sounds best

Remember to take your time when first restringing a guitar. Take care that you learn the correct method. There will be less slippage and breakage or tuning problems if you learn in this way.

When you first put on new strings play all the semitones, fret by fret, along the string length and then retune the guitar. This will allow the strings to stretch more quickly and settle down and stay in tune.

There are a lot of classical guitar strings on the market. It pays to experiment until you find the one that is right for you

Restringing a guitar can be a bit daunting at first. Approach the task slowly and take time to learn the correct methods.

It's Time To Learn Guitar!

Are you ready to play the unofficial "most cool instrument in the world"? Well, yeh, that's the guitar. Yes, playing guitar is cool. Some people miss out on it, though - but they'll look back later with remorse and say: "i studied classical piano when i could've been playing guitar..."

But since you've decided to learn guitar, I'd like to give you a few pointers to get you started.

First of all, if you're serious, get a decent instrument. Don't pick up a $50 guitar from Walmart. At least invest in a name brand beginner's guitar. I bought an Oscar Schmidt acoustic guitar from a friend for $90. A price like that sure didn't break the bank, but it's a quite decent guitar, especially for someone like me - my expertise is on the keyboard, not the guitar.

Secondly, get some help learning guitar. If you're pretty musical, you might get by with a DVD or instruction book teaching you how to play. Or, you may have a friend who can help you out a little. Most of us, though, will learn guitar quicker with a teacher. Find a teacher that is a good guitarist, but is also a good teacher. Also, be sure that they play the type of guitar music you want to learn. For example, if you want to play rock music, don't get a classical guitarist for a teacher!

Thirdly, learn guitar by playing songs that you love. It's much more fun to practice when you're playing your favorite songs. The great thing about contemporary guitar music is that no matter how much of a beginner you are, you can find great songs to learn. If you're really new, you might even want to try one of the old "three chord" rock songs, by the likes of Elvis.

Of course, one of the most important things you should do is practice!

Classical Guitar: The 4 Important Elements

The classical guitar is one of the most important instruments of the renaissance period and even in the contemporary times, it is considered as one of the finest musical instruments. If you have been thinking of picking up some lessons in classical guitar then you should go ahead because the entire process of playing this instrument is an experience in itself.

Some experts believe that if you can play the classical guitar to perfection then you can play any other type of guitar from rhythm to lead. Pitch

The headstock is the thin end of the guitar all the strings are tied to a screw. The traditional layout will have 3 strings on one side and 3 strings on the other also known as the 3+3 tuner layout. By playing the strings in different parts of the guitar or the fret board, you can take out high or low pitch sounds, which will come into play in the advanced classical guitar lessons.

Rhythm
The rhythm is at the heart of guitar playing because it consists of a single beat or a multiple beats. So when you hear a particular tune on a guitar then it is not really a tune, it is a rhythm. In a particular music composition, you will be playing several different types of beats or rhythms.

Dynamics
Dynamics is sound related and refers to the change in the volume or intensity of the sound coming out of your classical guitar. For example: if you pluck a string lightly then the intensity of the sound will be low but if you pluck a string hard then the sound will be loud and bold. Dynamics are used to highlight a particular section of a classical composition.

Timbre
Technically speaking, Timbre is defined as the actual quality of sound that is brought out by the harmonic content of that particular sound. To make it sound simpler, timbre is like adding color to your composition and is caused only when the strings vibrate. To an extent the type of timbre depends a lot on where you touch the string or pluck it to make it vibrate.

Here are some tips to determine if the classical guitar lessons are good or not:
- The lessons should include familiarizing with the classical guitar
- The lessons will start with the basic understanding before jumping to scales and chords

The Difference Between Electric Guitar Bodies And Acoustic Bodies

Because electric guitars are quite different in the way that they produce the sound, the body of an electric guitar is built quite differently to that of an acoustic or classical one. On a classical guitar, the strings, when plucked or struck, resonate, vibrating the air inside the body cavity. This hollow body cavity vibrates with the sound of the strings, and amplifies the notes. On an electric guitar however, the sound is amplified only by an external, electronic amplifier, and so the body of an electric guitar is usually solid, since no air vibration or cavity is needed. Indeed, without the external amplifier the sound of an electric guitar on its own is fairly pitiful. The body of an electric guitar is usually made of wood, although the pick guard is normally plastic.

Prior to the 1970s guitars were often made from a solid piece of hardwood, but in the last thirty or forty years, the worldwide stock of hardwood has been so depleted that finding a piece large enough and suitable for a guitar body is not only difficult, but exceedingly expensive. Therefore, today, most electric guitar bodies are made from at least two pieces of hardwood, with a seam that connects them together running down the centre of the body. The hardwoods most often used for constructing the body of an electric guitar include maple, ash, poplar, basswood and mahogany, all of which provide a solid, firm body that is unlikely to warp or bend as a result of either humidity, or the constant pressure of the steel strings. When you look at a guitar, it is not always obvious what type of wood is used, and this is because the normal hardwoods, by the very nature of being hardwood, are less patterned.

To create a visually striking and attractive appearance, designers and manufacturers of electric guitars usually apply a very thin piece of a more attractive wood to the outside of the body, to create an attractive wood finish, whilst still retaining the solid hardwood body. Typically these veneer coverings of wood, which are usually glued to the main body, are made from such woods as maple, which usually produces a very striking flame effect, and guitars that use this flame appearance through the use of maple are called flame top guitars or simply 'flame tops'. Because a number of other pieces of the guitar need to be attached very firmly to the body of an electric guitar, the hardwood is usually gouged or routed to accept these other elements being slotted in. For an acoustic or classical guitar, the inside can be accessed to attach braces to increase the firmness of these extra components, such as the bridge and neck, but as an electric guitar's body is entirely solid, this is not possible.

Today, there are some electric guitars being made which do not use wood in the construction at all, and instead are using modern alternatives, usually synthetically produced. These alternatives to wood include carbon composites and even plastic based materials such as polycarbonate. In some instances electric guitars have been made with aluminium based alloys, which whilst very strong, is also extremely light. Electric guitars, more than most other types of guitar, are usually decorated and designed as much for appearance as sound quality, and so the body of an electric guitar is often lacquered and polished to a high sheen, to either bring out the wooden effect, or to simply produce an even more vibrant appearance. Often electric guitar bodies are decorated with extravagant designer labels or motifs to create a strikingly visual instrument, as well as one strong enough to withstand heavy use.

Guitar Accessories: More Than Just Icing

Accessories, as any good fashionista will tell you, can either make or break an outfit. Now I'm not suggesting that a guitar played with last year's guitar pick simply isn't worth the effort, or that red guitar straps are the new black. However, guitar accessories do have one thing in common with their fashion counterparts-each is designed to help the user get the most out of his or her instrument or outfit, as the case may be.

There is actually a rather long list of guitar accessories available to the discerning guitar player. These range from various types of guitar supports to amplifiers to nail kits. Yes, nail kits. Hey, all that plucking and strumming can be murder on your cuticles. Suffice it to say, there are enough guitar accessory options to ensure that anyone, be they novice or master, can at least look like they know what they're doing with their guitar.

Some accessories allow the artists to increase the variety of sounds that can be created by the guitar. For instance the capotasto, or "capo," as it is more commonly called, is used to alter the pitch of the strings. This accessory is clipped to the fret board through either spring or elastic tension, and the use of one allows the artist to play in different keys without having to change the chord formations. Because of the ease with which they allow guitar players to change keys, these little gizmos are sometimes referred to as "cheaters."

A plectrum, commonly referred to as a guitar pick, is a small piece of hard material used to "pick" a guitar's strings. While most classical players prefer to use their finger nails (hence the nail kits), the guitar pick is commonly used amongst electric and sometimes acoustic guitar players. It is usually held between the thumb and first finger of the picking hand and is generally made of plastic, although bone, wood, steel and tortoise shell picks can also be purchased. The guitar pick comes in many shapes, sizes and thicknesses and varies depending on the application. Jazz picks are usually small and agile, whereas those intended for base guitars are generally larger.

A guitar accessory does not even need to be specifically designed for the guitar; it can be anything the artist uses to alter the instrument's sound. The term "slide" in guitar lingo can refer to the neck of a bottle, a knife blade or a round metal bar that is used to create a glissando, or a gliding transition from one pitch to another.
