Guitar Sheet Music, Guitar Tablature - An Effective way of Learning Guitar

One of the best ways to practice the guitar is through the use of a guitar tablature or the guitar sheet music.

Guitar tablatures are the most effective guide in learning and playing the guitar. Today people can find variety of resources from books and especially the World Wide Web. Reading the guitar music requires patience and knowledge, and with practice you can strum along to your favorite song without hassle.

Guitar sheet music or tablatures are easy to understand and read once you've known the basics.

First you need to know its parts and purposes. Some guitar tablatures also include the musical staff, which indicates the notes and the tempo timing of the song, but it is mostly for advance musicians who can read notes. Beginners should start by learning to read the tablature sheet.

The guitar sheet music is made up of 6 lines, which act as the guitar strings. The upper line is the high pitch E string while the lowest is the bass E string. There are numbers written on the line, which indicates the finger positions on the fret bar. Also you can find letters on the tab like "p" which means pull (the pulling of fingers from the strings) and "h" for hammer (hammering the string with fingers). The strumming patterns though indicated with a symbol would be learned easily if you play along with the song.

You can find guitar sheet music of your favorite songs from music books and websites that offer free tablatures submitted by fellow musicians. There is also computer software, which shows you not only the tablature but plays it as well together with sound for easy learning.

There are lots of effective ways of learning the guitar and learning how to read guitar music is a good thing to learn and practice.

Learning the guitar requires a lot of skills and dedication to excel and guitar sheet music is indeed the best help for learning the instrument. It will require a lot of time and effort but once you get used to it, you'll see that you can play any song as long as there's a tablature to read.

Some people say that using guitar tablatures is the same as cheating, but most people and musicians who also devote time writing sheet music thinks that it's just to speed things up for beginning musicians.

Some may not be a fan. Some may prefer learning by ear, but for beginners and for those who want to save themselves from the hassle of learning the song by listening to it over and over, reading guitar sheet music is a shortcut.

Using tablatures is not bad but if you want to excel further you might as well teach yourself music theories and practice learning by ear. After all, guitar tablature is one of the many methods to practice and learn guitar. It is also a great help to satisfy yourself when you're playing a song you have always wanted to play.

11 Damaging Mistakes Guitar Players Make and How to Avoid Them

Do you know how some guitar players practice most days of the week, work hard, and are passionate about their guitar playing, but they always struggle to be able to play guitar the way they want? They are frustrated because they don't improve fast enough, begin doubting their guitar playing potential, or even feel discouraged or angry with themselves when thinking about how long it is taking them to become a better guitar player.

Can you relate to that? I sure can, I just described myself 15 years ago.

There are specific reasons why guitar players go through such frustration and disappointment. Here are 11 key mistakes guitar players make and repeat over and over again that you should definitely avoid.

1. Teaching Yourself To Play Guitar. Many people attempt to teach themselves how to play guitar. Yes, it's true that some well known players were 'somewhat' self taught, but I do not suggest following that strategy even if your favorite player was self taught. If you are 100% sure that you can build powerfully effective learning and training systems on your own, that's great. However, if you are like most of us, doing it alone is the hardest, most time-consuming, stressful, and frustrating way to learn anything. This is a mistake that you should avoid. Some guitar players think it will impress others if they say, "I am a self taught guitar player". That statement might impress a few inexperienced people, but being self taught is not a 'badge of honor'. Would you rather impress others with your guitar playing or with an unimportant statement about your guitar playing? I'm not criticizing self taught guitar players, I'm only saying that there is no advantage to being self taught... and no, it is not true that being 'self taught' makes us more 'original'. In fact, the opposite is usually true.

2. Taking Guitar Lessons From Ineffective Guitar Teachers. Unfortunately, most electric guitar teachers receive ZERO training on how to teach guitar. What is worse is that the vast majority of teachers do little or nothing to improve their guitar teaching skills. Want some proof? Use google's keyword tool . Type in this keyword phrase: 'improve guitar teaching skills', 'guitar teaching skills', or 'guitar teaching training' and you will find that less than 10 searches per month are done for these topics at google! Of course there are some highly effective electric guitar teachers around, but there are a whole lot more ineffective teachers.

3. Seeking New Guitar Information (tricks, tips, tab) Without A Proven Strategy To Reach Your Specific Musical Goals. We need information, advice, help and music to play, but without a proven strategic learning and training process that is specific to you, your skill level, your musical style and what you want to be able to do as a guitar player, information won't get you where you want to go. It is better to first seek help in developing a customized strategy for you to become a better guitar player. After that strategy is in place, then it is time to deal with learning the right information.

4. Not Knowing Specifically What You Want To Be Able To Play. Most guitar players are not specific enough when they think about (or tell others about) what they want to be able to do with their guitar. To say, "I want to play whatever I wish to play" is too vague. How can you (or your guitar teacher) develop a specific and effective guitar training strategy unless the goals you have are specific? It's like saying you want to be a great athlete, how can you effectively train with such a vague goal? Sure there are things you can do to become faster, stronger, more flexible or whatever, but it's much easier if you first get specific such as, I want to train to be a gymnast, or a long distance runner, or a body builder. Yes you can still improve without a strategy, but it will take a lot longer and be much more frustrating. You can always change your goal later if you discover you want to do something else instead.

5. Not Enough Focus On Things That Matter Most To Making You A Better Guitar Player. Have you fallen into the trap of practicing guitar without focusing on the specific things that can quickly begin to improve your guitar playing? Many people really do not understand and apply this concept in enough detail.... for example, I have a student named Mark who used to take lessons from another teacher in the past. Mark was studying sweep picking arpeggios with his previous teacher, and was making some progress. However Mark did not understand what 'specific' things he needed to focus on first before attempting to master the sweep picking arpeggios he was practicing. This was holding him back and making him feel very frustrated. Mark's previous teacher only knew how to 'teach' arpeggios and general sweep picking concepts. He did not really know how to "train" Mark with the specific things to focus on and how to overcome the challenges Mark was having.

6. Too Much Focus On Things That Are Not Core To Your Goals. In addition to not focusing on specific things, many guitar players focus on the 'wrong things'. Some enthusiastic guitar players become temporarily obsessed with things which are distractions from other things that could be helping their guitar playing much more. Here is an example: I used to get so frustrated and angry when I could not play something perfectly, I'd lock myself in my guitar practice room and say, "I'm not coming out of this room until I master this damn lick if it takes me the next 19 hours! No breaks! No food! No human contact! I'm gonna nail this!" And I did master it. On the surface, it might seem like I was on the right track and practicing in a good way.... But in reality, I was spending my time only to stop being angry and frustrated. I was not investing my guitar practice time wisely by focusing on the things that mattered most to making a better guitar player. In other words, my perseverance was commendable, but my strategy to master important long-term goals was weak. I allowed myself to be distracted. I don't make this same mistake anymore, and I urge you to also avoid it! Focus on the things that really matter for your guitar playing right now. If you are not sure how to do this, seek out a proven guitar teacher today.

7. Focusing On The Right Things, But in The Wrong Order. This is a common mistake that even many advanced guitar players make which causes a lot of wasted time and frustration. Imagine you want to improve your ability to create your own cool guitar solos. Let's assume that you are advanced enough to truly understand all the primary and secondary elements of composing guitar solos (or you have a guitar teacher to help you). Each of the many elements need to be learned and/or practiced in order to easily create awesome solos that you like. Where should you begin? What should you focus on first, second, third? Which of these things should you practice simultaneously? There is always a specific order in which musical skills should be learned and mastered in order to EXPLODE your musical skills. Unfortunately, that order is totally different for every person, style of music, musical goal, skill set and knowledge, so giving an example here would be pointless. My advice, find the best teacher you can and study with him/her in order to be able to do what you want to do with your guitar much faster and easier.

8. Not Isolating Problem Areas. Few guitar players are aware of the small things that hold them back in big ways. Because these little imperfections seem insignificant to us, we often ignore them. The truth is, small hinges open big doors. In the video mentioned above I explained how allowing your guitar pick to lose its momentum when you are 'not picking' a note on the guitar makes your playing slow and sloppy.... which will make you feel very frustrated. This is why I was sure to make a special point to help you avoid that mistake.

9. Learning And Practicing Guitar In A Step By Step Linear Process. Does following a linear step by step approach to learning, practicing and mastering guitar seem like common sense good to you? Yes it does... And that is why guitar players who follow such a path are NOT great guitar players. I'm going to let you in an insider's secret... The truth is, following a linear approach to learning guitar, practicing guitar, and mastering guitar is the NUMBER ONE REASON WHY "GOOD GUITAR PLAYERS" STRUGGLE TO BECOME "GREAT GUITAR PLAYERS"...

10. Practicing Guitar In The Same Way Your Favorite Guitar Players Practice Guitar. Have you ever read about how your favorite guitar players practice guitar and then tried to repeat the same practice routine? Yes, I've made this mistake too! It seems natural to use a similar guitar practice schedule that our favorite guitar players are using. This is a mistake, because your current guitar skill level and knowledge of music is probably very different from your favorite player. His/her challenges and needs are likely not the same as yours.

Professional guitar players practice for different reasons than most amateur players do. For example, before recording a new album I will practice very differently compared to the period before going on tour. Once I'm actually on tour my practice routine changes drastically again. The rest of the year my practicing schedule changes yet again. This happens because in each case my challenges and goals are totally different. When my guitar students ask me, "Tom, how do you practice guitar?" I'm careful not to let my students assume that they should practice the same way that I do. Your practice schedule and strategy needs to be built around YOU and you only! If you need help building your own practice schedule, email me directly.

11. Learning From Too Many Different Sources Of Information. There will always be many learning opportunities and various paths to take, but it is critical that you do not get distracted into following a piece of advice from one person, then another piece of advice from another person and then follow more resources from somewhere else and so on and so on... while different people may have some good ideas to offer, the fact is, distraction is a big reason why many guitar players who are actively learning, don't really move forward quickly... these people are always busy following totally different resources, teachers, philosophies, instructional videos, free online guitar lessons, but all of this leads them to take one step forward, then 2 steps to the right, then one step forward, then 3 steps to the left, then one step backward, then two to the right, then 1 step forward and then another step to the left...

Once you have an effective strategy to become the guitar player you want to be, ALWAYS stay focused on it (unless your goals radically change)!! The very best way to do this is to have ONE primary guitar teacher who helps you to become the musician you really want to be.

This doesn't mean that you shouldn't take advice from other people too, but you should have one 'primary' source of information, training and coaching, and see the other advice as an additional resource, but do not become distracted by it.

Home Guitar School Using Guitar Software

The decision to go to a guitar music school or university, instead of learning with guitar software, is the most common way to learn the guitar for serious aspiring students seeking a high quality guitar education. The desire to gain a strong guitar and musical knowledge is a serious educational pursuit and there are many levels of music theory curriculum, fretboard logistics, musical application and much more that non professional musicians do not realize until they have experienced many years of frustration trying to learn the guitar.

Therefore, going to a guitar school or university of some type to obtain a music degree with an emphasis on the guitar obviously makes sense, because a music school does not have the time, money, resources, or ability to attract high paying students with a program that is of the same low quality as the fifty dollar online guitar lesson downloads available on the internet.

Learning guitar in school isn't just simply about memorizing some chords or scales but requires a significant base of knowledge, study and practice. Without going to a music school the guitar player is faced with a plethora of online and other various computer programs and books with teaching programs that are consistently fragmented and "hyped" teaching methods that give you some information to get you on some learning path but never come close to fulfilling the term education. The term guitar education represents a serious study with university level and real world methodologies that provide the content of a music school. Education should also give you cutting edge methodology, teaching and practicing systems.

Guitar software offers you a chance to obtain an intensive, guitar education and musical application using methods that will turn you into the kind of knowledgeable and skilled guitar player that you have been hoping to acquire over the years without satisfactory success.

It is truly exciting and historical that with good guitar software you can bring the guitar university into your home in a complete instructional and practice center without leaving the house. Previously students of the guitar have not had the technology to be able to have total control of their learning and practice environment, even when going to a school computer lab.

Guitar students need structure, which is why they go to music school. Programs are structured to provide logical study paths and attainable goals. They need integrated courses that work together to give a big picture of what they are learning. This is why the music school provides a broad series of courses. And just as important the student needs interactive, musical practice to apply what they are learning. Often times a music school will have courses or labs for doing this. Therefore, a good guitar software program needs to provide all of these things for a student to have the real option of learning at home versus going to a school.

Few people have the opportunity to get the right teaching and tools to learn and master their guitar. For the guitar player who is serious about learning and is looking for something that will deliver more than just a lot of marketing and fragmented teaching, than it is possible to obtain a software program of a high caliber that will teach the guitar better, more thoroughly, and with more knowledge, than he or she ever dreamed about.

The level of guitar education a music university has to offer is important for your progress and it is nice to have this kind of education from home with software.

Learning How To Play The Guitar Could Be Quicker and Easier Using Tutorial DVDs

When you pick up your guitar you want to start to be able to play your favourite songs as soon as you can. Let’s face it - learning to play the guitar should be fun and not boring or frustrating.

Nowadays there are so many methods to teach you how to play the guitar and you should find the one that works best for you. If you find it boring learning from a book and you can't afford a private guitar tutor, then I recommend that you learn how to play the guitar with a professional guitar DVD.

Where Do You Get A Guitar Tutorial DVD?

The good news is that there are many DVDs available on the market today that can teach you how to play the guitar. Many of them are created by real guitar pros of all ages. You can find these DVD’s in music stores or you can order them from a virtual music shops on the Internet or ebay.

Before you buy though make sure that you choose a learning program that works for you. If you're purchasing it online, a great tip is to look for reviews and feedback from other buyers. My advice is that it is better to choose a learn guitar easy DVD that has a 90-day money back guarantee so that you can send it back if you are not satisfied. Most professional online tutors will have this option proudly displayed on their websites. If you are buying it from a music store, then the staff will usually be very helpful and can recommend you one that suits your current level.

Are There Benefits To Learn To Play The Guitar Using These DVD’s?

If you are like me and find it easier to sit and watch a tutor in action rather than just reading from a book then you will indeed benefit from a guitar tutorial DVD. Some DVDs are excellent and really will make it easier to learn how to play the guitar quickly and easily.

The good news is that they are not very expensive and most of them offer a no quibble money back guarantee if you find they don't meet your learning needs (such as being too advanced or too basic). A big bonus is that you get to practice in your own home, as often as you want, without wasting time on travelling to guitar classes and you can keep watching a certain part of the DVD over and over again so that the information really sinks in without having to be embarrassed by asking a tutor to repeat the exercise.

I don’t like to make the learning curve any harder than it is already and try to make life easier for myself so I find learning how to play the guitar DVD’s definitely make the learning process fun and entertaining. It is usually more successful in keeping you focused and interested than learning from a theory book, which can be heavy and hard going. Guitar DVD’s show you exactly how to play and demonstrations on how you should sound like which is a big, big plus!

Are There Any Disadvantages To Using How To Play The Guitar DVD’s?

On the whole I would say not. They are usually very good value for money and will help you to be able to play the guitar much more quickly than if you were trying to learn to play by yourself.

However, while you can learn how to play the guitar quickly and easily on DVD, some would argue that it cannot compete with a private teacher. For example a DVD provides a standard teaching program and is not customized to suit your individual learning style. It is more generic for a large audience whereas a teacher can design the method he/she uses to meet your learning needs and requirements.

Another thing to consider is that although it shows it how you should play, a guitar tutorial DVD cannot tell you when you're making a mistake and how to correct it. A guitar teacher can only really provide this kind of constructive feedback. A guitar tutor can be truly inspirational and offer positive feedback when you're progressing which will keep you motivated and dedicated to continue playing your guitar, but a guitar ‘how-to’ DVD won't know if what you're playing is good or bad.

So there you have it. If you can afford it, I’d recommend a private tutor as it is probably the most recommended learning strategy by all of the experts but a guitar tutorial on DVD can is definitely an acceptable compromise for people like me who get bored with theory books, but don't have the time and money to pay a professional guitar teacher.

Whichever method you choose, make sure that you enjoy it. Make it fun and continue to practise as often as you can and I promise that you will learn to play the guitar much more quickly than you first imagined.

Let me know how you get on.

Best wishes

A 5 Tip Guide To Choosing The Right Guitar Lessons Website

How would you like to learn to play lead guitar like a modern day rock and roll star? Do you want to be able to bust out incredibly intense solos? If you answered yes to both of these questions then you should really consider taking lead guitar lessons from a reputable teacher or source.

I have been playing guitar for over 20 years now, and if there is one thing I know for sure, it is really better to have some sort of guide; in the form of formal lessons or getting an instructor to mentor you. Learning it on your own can be trial an error like groping in the dark trying to discover the styles and scales by yourself. What's worse is, you might be learning the wrong way and developing bad playing habits that you may have a hard time getting rid of later on. Habits that will hinder you from ever getting any better.

The best approach is to find a reputable teacher or a reputable source to learn lead guitar from, and one of the most convenient ways to learn guitar today is through video tutorials on the internet. But what should you be looking for in a website that offers guitar lessons aside from the lessons they provide?

Personalized Plan

Different people have different ways of learning, and often when they start learning guitar, they have different playing levels; some are absolute beginners; others have a little bit of playing ability; and some who can already play well are looking for a way to improve their skills.

Find a guitar lesson site that doesn't give you a "one-size fits all" deal, because one size simply does not fit all. No one can learn to play the same way. Find a site that can provide you with a personalized lesson plan to match your playing level and to allow you to learn lead guitar at your own pace and give you clear direction.

A Variety of Genres

Many of the best guitarists and musicians claim that one of the things that made them really good at what they do, is the exposure to various musical genres and the opportunity to jam with artists of different music styles. Many guitarists in fact become more versatile and well rounded if exposed to a variety of styles and genres.

When finding a site to get lessons from, find out if they are limited to teaching just one style or genre, or if they offer a variety of playing styles that you can also learn.

Learning Tools

A great guitar lessons site does not just give lessons, but is dedicated to you really learning how to play guitar; and will provide you with all the tools and resources you need. Most of these tools are actually software that members can access over the internet, they could be in the form of digital guitar tuners to help you tune your guitar, a metronome to keep you in time and help you maintain pace and rhythm, a guitar jam feature that allows you to play along with your favorite songs and take care of the guitar parts; and many more. All these contribute to helping an aspiring guitar player, get better. If you are looking for lead guitar lessons that will help your soloing ability, you need these tools.

Teacher Support Online

Many years ago I was listening to this old Scorpions song and the guitar solo had this part which sounded very different from all the other notes. I kept playing the guitar line over and over and trying different ways to get that sound I heard. I tried different ways of striking, plucking, until i finally gave up after several hours of trying to figure out what it was. Some weeks later while fooling around on the guitar I accidentally hit a string with my guitar pick and in that downward stroke, the outer edge of my thumb slight muted that that same string. I thought I heard the sound I was looking for and kept at it, picking the guitar string at different parts. I had finally discovered after several weeks, what an experienced guitar teacher could have taught me in a couple of minutes.. a pinch harmonic. Don't waste time figuring things out, when someone can quickly help you out.

That being said, find a guitar lessons site offers online support, with a guitar teacher ready to take your questions and get your out of that dead end that you find yourself in.

A Free Trial

Guitar lesson sites are like guitar instructors, they each have their own methods, and their own ways of teaching. Before you commit yourself to a site and whip out your credit card to pay for these lessons, find a site that would be happy to give you a free trial. This is your chance to find out if you are comfortable with their setup, and if it is something that you feel would be worth your money.

Finally, regardless of how you learn to play guitar or from what site or who you learn from, remember that the lessons do not make you a better guitar player, you do. The lessons can only show you the way, show you what needs to get done; and how committed you are to doing what is required will decide whether you become a really good guitar player.

Learn How To Play The Guitar - It's Not So Hard

We live in an age where most people do not feel the need to learn to play a musical instrument like the guitar. But if you learn how to play the guitar you will be doing yourself a favor in so many ways. Until you have begun guitar lessons you do not know the feeling of engaging with a musical instrument, learning how to use your body and interact with the guitar to make music.

The common questions most beginner guitar players ask are, "How hard is it to learn to play the guitar?" and "How long will it take before I start making music?" To take the first question first, it is kind of daunting right at the beginning when you have bought your guitar, found some sheet music or guitar tab, and in that first moment as you begin, you realize how much you do not know. From there it gets easier. You practice for half an hour or an hour a day, you get some callouses on your left hand fingertips and you get into the routine of learning easy guitar chords. Every day you practice you feel some progress.

As for how long it takes before you start sounding good on the guitar, it varies but you could say three months. If you practice regularly you can go from a guitar no-nothing to someone who can play a song all the way through, in time, without stopping three months from now. If you do not try the three months still goes past but you still do not know how to play the guitar.

What do you learn in this first three months of guitar playing? Making music entails learning guitar chords and how to read musical notes in the form of tab or sheet music. You will probably learn to play an acoustic guitar with nylon strings first to give your fingers a chance to toughen up and to learn to play without the sound of an electric guitar covering up your mistakes.

The acoustic guitar also has the advantage of quietness. When you first learn to play the guitar you do not want to make enemies of your friends and family as you make your first, possibly un-musical sounding efforts to play. With an acoustic guitar you can also take it anywhere with you to practice in a more inspirational setting or when you get a break from your work or studies.

A final point I should touch on is the question of learning to read music. There is so much guitar music in tab form on the internet these days anyone who wants to learn how to play the guitar should be able to get along quite well without learning to read sheet music. In fact it would be hard to find a guitar course that relied solely on sheet music. If you are young and feel some enthusiasm for learning music theory, you will probably get enormous benefits from taking the slightly longer road to learning how to play the guitar, but if it all seems like too much trouble, you can manage without it.

The next step for you now is to find some easy guitar songs and some advice on how to hold the guitar beginning to learn how to play.

Why You'll Fail To Learn Guitar - And What To Do About It

Whatever your reason is for wanting to play the guitar, your excitment and passion will be at their highest when you walk into the music store and buy your first guitar. The dream has begun. But when the challenge of learning to play your new instrument begins, the dream has to give way to reality.

Many people find that it's harder to learn guitar than they thought, especially if they are trying to teach themselves. There are a number of reasons for this.

My Guitar keeps going out of tune!

Failure to prepare yourself before buying your first guitar is the first on the list. If you don't spend some time researching different guitars and what to look for, you will probably end up with a guitar that either doesn't fit you well and is not comfortable to play, or is of poor quality. Getting the wrong guitar can have a big effect on your ability to progress. A cheap poor build guitar will not only have a poor quality sound, but may well lose tune quickly. This will be a cause of discouragement while you try to learn.

Make sure that you take time over buying your first guitar. There are many guides on the internet that explain how to go about buying a guitar, so make good use of these.

Ouch - That hurt!

The second on the list occurs when you start playing. The new guitar player will, after a while, experience some pain. The pain may occur in the arm or wrist, and if you are learning on an acoustic, you will also suffer from painful finger tips on your fret hand. Finger pain is not usually a problem on electric guitars as less pressure is needed to hold down the string.

This is just something you have to work through. You should limit your practice sessions while you go through this stage until the tips of your fingers have firmed up and become less painful. Pay attention to posture and the way you hold the guitar to help with any arm or wrist pain, and make sure that you always carry out some warm up exercises before you practice.

Faster faster!

The third problem is trying to play too fast. As a beginner learning guitar you will be in a hurry for a result. This tends to make you rush your practice, and then you get frustrated that you can't change chords quickly enough, or the chords don't play cleanly. If you practice like this, all you are doing is practicing to make mistakes. These mistakes will then become fixed, and you will have to spend time trying to unlearn these mistakes.

Make sure that you practice at a slow pace. Speed at this stage is not important, accuracy is. Once you have practiced enough to play accurately, then is the time to try playing it a bit faster. A metronome, which beats time for you at whatever speed you set it to,will help you keep your practice at a nice slow pace.

I'm too busy, I'll practice tomorrow.

The fourth problem is irregular or insufficient practice. When you start learning guitar, you must be able to allow a reasonable amount time for regular practice sessions. You may find when you start that there are difficulties finding the time due to other commitments, work, family etc.. You may be in a job with irregular hours or have to travel a lot. You may also not have anywhere to practice that doesn't annoy other members of the household. Learning guitar is a commitment, and you will have to deal with any issues that prevent you practicing regularly.

What the hell does that mean!

Finally there is the quality of your instruction. If you can afford a professional teacher this is the best way to go. Alternatively if you know someone who can play they may be able to help you. Many opt for self instruction, and there is a wealth of material, courses, books DVDs etc. to choose from. This is the final vital link. Choosing the right course that is able to communicate well with you is essential. If you are working with materials that you find difficult to follow your learning will be a lot harder than it needs to be. Find out as much as you can about possible courses before opting for one. This point alone could be the make or break decision.

Learning guitar is a challenge and one that is immensely rewarding. By taking some care in your approach, you will give yourself a better chance of success.

How To Practice Guitar

To begin to understand how to practice the guitar for maximum benefit you must first understand what practicing is. To practice the guitar is not the same as sitting down and playing the guitar. While replaying things you already have mastered has its place later on in the practicing regime, practice is truly learning some new material to further build whatever skills you have already.

However, what if you are a new beginner to the world of playing the guitar? Where do you start if you know nothing? There are several basics that all new players must develop before they can move on to learning and perfecting sounds or songs. They are:

-Toughening your fingers. The strings on a guitar can be very sharp and can cause pain to tender fingers that have never been exposed to the pressure needed to apply to a guitar string. So working your fingers into a calloused state where the playing of anything is no longer painful is essential to beginning guitar players.

-Start to work your fingers and build your knowledge base of the guitar by starting with learning individual notes. Once the basic notes are understood, you can move on to more complicated combinations and new sounds.

-Having learned the individual notes will lead you directly into learning the chords and structures used when playing the guitar in a more advanced way. Chords tend to be the starting block for most songs out there and thus must be learned for application in differing musics.

-Developing your sense of beat or rhythm is of course essential to anyone who strives to learn a musical instrument. You have to be able to mark a beat and carry it steadily as tempos change and a song progresses.

-Learning your frets goes hand-in-hand with this and is important to chord learning as well as to song learning. You need to understand your instrument to best use it to your benefit to produce the music you desire to play.

-And of course there are different strumming methods to be learned so as to be able to effectively use them as they are called for in any formalized music. As tempos and beats speed up and slow down, different strumming methods are required and you must learn them in preparation for when they will be called into use.

Once you have begun to learn the basics in using a guitar to make music, it is often advised that a beginner look into getting a tutor. In doing this, you expose yourself to someone who is much more efficient when it comes to using the guitar and who has developed a philosophy of the music he or she creates. This is why it is important to learn a lot about a tutor you may want to hire before you begin to actually work with him or her as you want to make sure that their philosophy is as close to your own as possible, thus creating the most conducive learning environment for yourself. Philosophy is crucial in your approach to making music on the guitar and must work as well for you as it does for your tutor.

Once you have hired a tutor you are comfortable with, you will most likely be exposed to learning to read music. This may seem daunting at first but it will help you immensely as you continue your pursuit of learning the guitar as you progress to more difficult pieces and more advanced playing situations. Also, you will probably be exposed to learning the theories behind playing the guitar and behind playing music in general, all of which will only add to your ability to play more effectively as you begin to understand music more completely.

You will also be presented with a practice plan and it is important to realize that setting goals for a single session is not as productive as setting your plan for a week. Practice times are not to be etched in stone and a definite number of hours and minutes is only detrimental to the learning process. You must be dedicated enough to put in appropriate amount of time but also you must feel the music as you play, and not be distracted by clock-watching.

It is important to remember that while you may have a tutor you are paying to guide you on your exploration with the guitar, it is still necessary for you to find time to experiment and explore different ways to play. Once you have learned a few easy songs, repeating them as is does little to expand your learning . . . but trying them in a different key or improvising with them to add new sounds to the original song does, and you should find time to experiment with your growing knowledge base in your practice sessions.

Listening to a variety of different styles of music is important as you begin to play music yourself. It allows you to see a variety of ways the information you are learning is being used by professionals and semi-professionals around the world. This can also inspire you to try something new in your experimentations that perhaps you never would have contemplated before if you had not listened to differing styles of music. Soon you will begin to be able to pick out changes in chords, musical patterns, tempo, and strumming styles and recognize where they began and where they ended up.

It is also so very important to always remember as you begin your desire to practice and learn the guitar for the maximum benefit that the art of learning the guitar is not a race. Everyone will learn at their own pace, and it is not a dead-heat to the finish line. Take your time and learn every step of the way to your satisfaction and the music you end up producing will be the most satisfying sounds you ever heard emitted from the guitar you are so patiently learning to play. Practice is important if you want to learn anything but especially so in the guitar as it is much more complex an instrument to master than others.

Tips For Learning to Play the Electric Guitar

The electric guitar is one of the most powerful musical instruments today. It dominates every popular genre and style of music in the modern world. The sheer flexibility of the electric guitar in terms of volume, tone and sound quality makes it an ultimate musical instrument.

The electric guitar is an instrument of power or finesse, of speed or subtlety, but definitely, it is an instrument of musical glory. For those people who would want to learn how to play the electric guitar, here are some noteworthy tips:

1. Use a nylon guitar first

If one is thinking about learning how to play a guitar by using an electric guitar, he should think about it twice. If one is just learning how to play the guitar, he shouldn’t do it with an electric guitar. Electric guitars use steel strings which can be very uncomfortable for beginners. Besides, learning the basics from an acoustic guitar teaches one to use a holistic guitar playing approach rather than relying on the effects and features of an electric guitar. Electric guitar playing should come subsequently after learning how to play using an acoustic guitar.

2. Know your electric guitar

If one already knows how to play a guitar and is thinking of buying an electric guitar, he should know the different features and qualities of the electric guitar. The same thing goes for people who are using an old electric guitar. Playing with the knobs and controls of the electric guitar will give one an idea of how to mix everything properly to be able to get an optimal sound. Electric guitars are not plug-and-play instruments, they require a lot of sensitivity in terms of mixing sounds and tones together.

3. Buy a decent amp

An expensive electric guitar will sound crappy on low quality amps on any given day. When getting an electric guitar amp, make sure to test the amp at the store. If possible, turn all the knobs to the highest value and listen to the sound that the amp will produce. There are also amps out there that have a built-in distortion option which can be switched on and off. This feature is especially useful for people who have no money to buy an effects box since a distortion feature is the most essential for any electric guitar.

4. Buy a decent effects box

An effects box is a great tool to have when playing an electric guitar. One can make all sorts of sounds using an effects box. The basic tones that one should look for in an effects box are: good distortion sounds, chorus, reverb, amp simulator and easy adjustments modules.

5. Get durable cables

Cables are also an integral part of the whole electric guitar system. Cheap and low quality cables are not worth investing into because they will wear out soon.

6. Listen to electric guitar tracks

A great way to holistically grasp the basics of electric guitar playing is to listen to great electric guitar classics. Many lessons are learned just by listening to different riffs and tunes that are produced from electric guitars.

Electric guitars are somewhat different from unplugged guitars. There are skills that are needed to play the electric guitar properly aside from the basic ones. Practice is always the best way to learn how to play the electric guitar.

Learning Guitar Basics

When you start with something new, you are usually so eager to jump into this new venture with both feet that you forget that every subject has its own basic information and way of doing things. When you start learning guitar playing, you want to be the new sensation on the hit charts within one day. Woa – pull in the reigns. Learn the guitar basics first. Why? You will be a better guitar player later on. Even the masters of the guitar started off with the basics and progressed from there. There are many things that are included when you learn guitar basics: the chords, the scales, the fingering, but perhaps most importantly, you need to learn all of the different parts of the guitar.

How is a guitar constructed?

One of the basic reasons to learn guitar basics, is to know the different parts of a guitar. As you progress, you will meet different terms for the parts of a guitar and if you do not know those terms, you can find yourself struggling to learn the guitar. First of all, you should know what the body of the guitar is:

1. The guitar’s body is the large wooden part of the guitar.

2. The thin part of the guitar that is connected to the body of the guitar is called the neck.

3. The bridge is located on the body of the guitar near the hole.

4. The strings of the guitar begin at the bridge and end at the pegs, which is located on the head of the guitar.

5. The head of the guitar is on the end of the neck not connected to the body.

6. There are small metal pieces located at various intervals along the neck of the guitar. These metal pieces are called the frets. When the player presses the strings into the frets at various intervals, the strings vibrate and produce different pitches.

The way you hold the guitar differs for nearly every type of song you play on a guitar. If you are right handed, your right hand is your strumming hand. Thus, you hold your guitar so that your right hand rests on the strings of the guitar above the hole. This means that your left hand is your picking hand, and your left hand should rest on the neck of the guitar. If you are left handed, then you should use these directions as well, only reversed.

Take time to learn the guitar basics and you will be richly rewarded not only with money, but also with a life long relationship with a wonderful instrument.

Playing Bass Guitar Made Easy With Bass Guitar Tabs

You need a manual to operate a new appliance. You need to read the rules before you play a new board game. Learning to play the bass guitar is no different. You’ll have a manual like no other – the tablature.

Guitar Tablature

Learning to play the bass guitar is made easy with guitar tablature. Anybody who has a guitar and is willing to spend some time learning the rudiments can get along fine. If you are new to guitar lessons, do not be confused about tabs and tablature. They mean the exact, same thing in guitar lingo.

Bass guitar tabs or other guitar tablature provide visual interpretation of the guitar’s fret board so formal training is not necessary to understand guitar tabs. Bass guitar tabs are also easy to read and interpret; hence, application is faster and easier. Bass guitar tabs are musical notations that look like a written music document. Instead of the usual dots spread on a 5 line stave to show a specific note, the frets are numbered on a six line stave. The line represents a guitar’s string. Therefore, the six lines are the six strings of the guitar. Bass guitar tabs are also read from left to right.

If you have a four-stringed bass guitar, the bass guitar tabs will show four horizontal lines representing the four strings. The topmost string is the G string, followed by the D string, the A string, and lastly, the E string. If you see two numbers (one above the other) on one string, it indicates that the string is to be played simultaneously.

Wake up those fingers

If you are reading bass guitar tabs, you will notice that you won’t be determining the position of the fret board where you have to play the note. The bass guitar notes can be played in various left hand positions and on diverse strings. Bass guitar tabs are also easy to understand because the notations are clear. Instead of learning how to study the pitch, you are learning where to place your fingers.

Playing the bass guitar is taxing. It requires speed, and with all the slapping and sliding, the fingers should be exercised regularly to perform well. In addition, your fingers should be able to take the impossible chords and switch chords with ease and agility. Practicing the hand is basic in bass guitar playing. You have to achieve speed without losing accuracy with each pluck. You also have to get used to the sensation of holding the guitar without using your left hand. As you go along, you will discover that you won’t be depending on your left hand to prop the guitar. Master this, and play all bass guitar tabs with ease.

Apart from the bass guitar tabs and acquiring fingering speed, bass guitarists have to learn the tapping, slapping, and popping techniques. These techniques support the song context, making the notes more appealing and distinctive.

Get those bass guitar tabs

The Internet has made it possible for almost everyone to get guitar tabs. They can choose the songs they want to play, or even entire albums of their favorite rock bands. Bass guitar tabs can be downloaded anytime. E-books and CDs on all guitar tabs and playing styles are also available for a minimal fee. Joining guitar forums can also boost your knowledge about bass guitars – tabs and all. Indeed, master the manual and you’ll master the instrument.

Classical Guitar - Is Playing The Classical Guitar More or Less Difficult Than A Regular Guitar?

The classical guitar is a difficult instrument to learn how to play. Purchasing a classical guitar can be a difficult task particularly if you are not yet an accomplished player. As you take guitar lessons either on your own or with a help of a professional guitar player, you are most likely to encounter guitar sheet music.

Instead of giving the guitar player in your life cash to go towards the lessons, you can contact the teacher and pay for the lessons up front, or have them give you a gift certificate. Guitar lessons are a great gift for the guitar player in your life because you can take them no matter which level you are at. A little discipline, regardless of whether you have an inborn talent or not for playing the guitar, can better your chances of becoming a good guitar player.

Have Discipline - The most important thing you have to do in order to advance in your skill with the classical guitar is to practice regularly. It is important to make sure that your equipment is in good order and that your guitar is tuned properly. The one drawback to online guitar lessons is that you don’t have a teacher right there in the room with you to help you place your fingers on the right strings and show you a specific chord.

However, while you can learn how to play the guitar quickly and easily on DVD, some would argue that it cannot compete with a private teacher. I don’t like to make the learning curve any harder than it is already and try to make life easier for myself so I find learning how to play the guitar DVD’s definitely make the learning process fun and entertaining. An important thing to remember when learning how to play guitar chords is that the movement of the right hand is as important as the movement of the left hand.

Aside from learning basic guitar techniques, these are the three most important things to work on to improve your guitar skills. This being the case, a guitar “course” must have several key elements, among them, short, well defined lessons that teach achievable and measurable skills, be tied to a computer, interactivity, have video content, and be fun with specialty games and exercises. These guitar tips will give you a headstart but remember that to play the guitar well it requires lots of practice and whatever you do, don’t give up.

Playing the guitar requires more than the requisite musical ability, dedication and practice. One of the most important aspects of playing the blues guitar is the ability to feel the music come from your soul and pour out through the guitar. A great way to holistically grasp the basics of electric guitar playing is to listen to great electric guitar classics.

Should You Take Private Guitar Lessons Or Buy Guitar Lessons On DVD?

Some good reasons for taking guitar lessons with a private teacher?

Before there were guitar lesson CD's, one could buy videocassettes to learn to play guitar, and before that there were a choice of books.
The other more expensive option was to enlist the help of a guitar teacher. Personally, I am all for the idea of going to a guitar teacher for lessons.
When I first began to play guitar, the choice of learning materials where books and private tuition. I used both.
There are a number of good reasons to choose a private guitar teacher, amongst other things,
a guitar teacher will give you lessons to complete before your next class. This is good for discipline, so you don't goof off.
A good guitar teacher is great for motivation, especially when you get a positive response for the work you've already done.
Sitting with a guitar teacher for an hour, while you run over the lessons, can give you more than just the lesson itself as often they have great advice to give.
When you develop a positive relationship with a teacher, your desire to please them can have a good effect on your performance.
Another good thing is that any questions you have during the week can be answered in your next lesson.

Some facts about famous guitarists, and how they learnt to play guitar.

Many famous guitarists are self taught, sure there's guys like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert etc, who went either to the Berkley school of music
or the Guitar institute of technology (GIT), but there's also guys like Eddie Van Halen who learned by slowing down old Clapton records and learning the licks.
I must say though that the guys who taught themselves how to play, seem to have a more distinct and recognizable style.
The list of guitarists who are self taught reads like a who's who of rock guitar legends, however, there are many excellent guitarists who went to schools.
Steve Vai, oddly enough, was a student of Joe Satriani. Who's a better guitarist? I'll let you decide.

Guitar lessons, who needs them?

The short answer is that you do. You see, all these famous self taught guitarists had to learn something from somewhere, whether it's Eddie working out those Eric Clapton solo's or a fully fledged and technically capable guitarist like Steve Vai, they all needed the right information to work with.
Somebody had to show them something.
If you want to learn guitar, the safest way is to get the right training. It's something we all instinctively know.
Those guitar greats are very talented people, and you may be one too, but they all had to learn their scales, chords, basic music theory etc.
To cut a long story short, everyone got guitar lessons from somewhere.

My heartfelt recommendation.

As I mentioned earlier, I personally have used both guitar instruction media and private tuition, but to be perfectly honest, my greatest advances as a guitarist have come from self-tutoring via books and video.
My guitar teacher taught me for six months, but I was hungry for knowledge and needed to learn what I specifically wanted to play. I was starting a band and didn’t have time to wait, while going along with lessons that weren’t tailored to my specific need.
The cost of a how to play electric guitar DVD (or acoustic guitar for that matter) is way less than one would pay for a few private lessons, and covers a heck of a lot more.
The interactivity of computer CD roms and DVD’s make learning the guitar so much easier nowadays, and successfully emulate the presence of a live teacher.
So there you have it, learn from them both.
By the way, you never stop learning how to play the guitar, you just rest in-between lessons.

One of my very good friends is a full time guitar teacher. When I asked him whether he felt threatened by all the guitar instruction media that’s available, his reply was “not at all”. He understands the value of his service, and supports the idea of people learning from other sources as well.

Guitar Lessons for Young Kids

When you get down to brass tacks, the evidence suggests some of the home guitar lessons offered stand well above the others. As far as I'm concerned, the job of a qualified guitar teacher is to make sure you experience success in the early stages of development. It's easy to make mistakes in the beginning stages of your new addiction.

An excellent teacher will avoid allowing anything but perfect technique. Young kids have to be taught proper techniques right off the bat. The question remains, how to find a good instructor. By now you may have figured out lots of people sell guitar lessons online. In reality, there are more reviewers than sellers of lessons. Who to believe.

Making mistakes and correcting them is part of learning guitar and never ends. Some mistakes get corrected and new ones develop. It's a never-ending and fun challenge. The finest lessons spend time in the beginning teaching the basics, mistakes are necessary to growth, develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping-stones to success.

Learning the basics properly will eliminate mistakes by more than you can imagine. So time spent in the beginning, learning proper technique actually saves time later on correcting mistakes. Correcting mistakes is much more difficult in later stages after they are ingrained in your mind. In your muscle memory.

If I am not making mistakes, than I'm not learning. So, I am always pressing to learn more, I understand that promotes mistakes, I also know that by practicing the troublesome area enough times, I will start to learn said piece of music and eventually with enough accumulated practice time, become very proficient at the piece of music.

I did not learn online. There was no internet when I learned guitar in the early sixties. Only strict, professional full service guitar teachers. Nothing like the private tutors of today, where they rush you in and out, not concerned if you really learned the lesson or not. It's just not cost effective to learn guitar in person anymore.

Online guitar lessons offer the richest and most fertile resources to learn guitar. Both fast and effectively. It's important to review each guitar curriculum with plenty of detail. You have a choice of Video guitar lessons which are outstanding and great for anyone learning guitar.

DVD guitar instruction is excellent for someone interested in a structured year-long curriculum as an excellent and affordable alternative to private lessons. Not only do you have the material on DVD to go over as many times as you want, but you can pass it down to someone else someday.

I think DVD guitar education are great home guitar lessons, and they are setup as learn at home guitar lessons. You have to learn more about the subject before any decisions are made. Educated consumers make better decisions. That is a proven fact.

The bottom line is this, to learn guitar is fun, it improves your memory, makes you more popular and is not against the law. How many things can claim all of that, and be legal? Join me, have fun, and entertain yourself and your friends. Online guitar lessons rule!

Learning The Guitar Is So Different Today

Those who know how to play the instrument want to explore ways to improve their playing skills. When learning how to play the guitar you will here guitar jargon, these types of words were created so guitar people are able to communicate with each other in their own context.

The speed and confidence you have in making chord changes is key to mastering the guitar and successfully playing the instrument. You must make yourself comfortable with the position so that you will be able to execute correctly while playing the guitar. The pinkie is not used since it is the shortest finger and is not conducive to playing the guitar. Playing classical guitar is more inclined to figure work and plucking.

Whatever the reason you’ve got the guitar, learning to play online is a must. Let’s face it learning to play the guitar should be fun and not boring or frustrating.

Many people can not learn or find it boring to learn from a book, and many people find that private lessons are much to expensive, there is an alternative learn how to play buy DVD course or by learning online. When practicing playing the guitar each time your practice you will see how it the practicing paid off and maybe one day you will be a great guitar player.

When you first start out learning the guitar the positioning of your hands will feel strange and it will feel like you can’t move your hands correctly, to make this easier it is ok to look at where your fingers are positioned and as time goes on you will no longer need to do this. Learn how to play the guitar the correct way the first time and this will make it easier in the future, if you try to take shortcuts this will not help and actually make it harder for you to learn.

The remedy for this is of course to practice reading the sheet music without looking at the fret board. However, there are many learning processes going on at the same time when you practice on your instrument. A beginner should practice tuning the guitar so that he can become better and better at it. You will need to practice often, try to create a schedule by looking at a calendar and make a plan and stick to it. Most people like to make an appointment so it seems like you cannot miss it. Essentially, effective guitar practice consists of taking four elements of playing the guitar and incorporating them into your practice routine.

When you make preparation, timing, and warming up a part of your routine of how to practice the guitar effectively, you will see how quickly you improve your skills. Please, whatever you do, don’t take up the guitar if you are only going to practice the last hour before your lesson. But it does mean you need to set aside time to practice and commit to actually it.

When first learning the guitar the beginner should begin with the common chords, this will be the easiest way to begin. We've all been there soon after we get hold of our first guitar we know that to play anything people are actually going to listen to we need to "learn a few chords".

How to Play Guitar - The Easier and More Affordable Way

Millions and millions of people around the globe want to learn how to play guitar but only a small percentage of these beginners are successful and can play some decent guitar riffs or songs. The rest of them are either dreaming to be a guitarist but don't want to spend energy, time and money, or learning guitar the wrong way. If you think that taking the private guitar course costs you a lot of time and money and still getting nowhere, you'd better forget about it and look somewhere else. If you searched all over the internet and learned the guitar yourself by referring to lots of guitar guidance's, tablatures, notes, scales and chords but still had no idea how to relate all of them and improvise in order to make musical sense, you'd need to stop wasting your resources too. There is always a better way to learn the guitar. You don't have to do it the hard way.

So what is the most fun, time-saving, effective, economical and easiest way to learn guitar? The professional online guitar course. You may have heard of this before but your concept about it may be wrong. It's not some low quality and free guitar lessons that you can find on the internet. It's an all-in-one, high quality, well-organized and affordable guitar course. Some of them are web-based where you can learn guitar online in front of your PC while others come with DVDs, books and CDs. Both types of courses include instructional videos, chords library, guitar tabs, jam tracks, sheet music, online guitar community forum etc. If you would like to have a metronome or tuner, a few of the courses provide free metronome and tuner softwares.

So basically, you don't have to waste your time searching for each and every item on the internet yourself; instead, you can start to learn guitar as soon as you have the access to the course. In my opinion, it's practically the same as private guitar lessons and better than guitar class where the teacher is unable to pay full attention to you because there are other students in the same class. Most guitar class only lasts for an hour so by the time the teacher gets around to showing you the lesson is over. While you can have all the attention you need in private guitar lessons, it's relatively more expensive than online guitar lessons. If you're on a tight budget, you may consider the latter as the better option.

I personally enjoy learning guitar from videos which are professionally shot, clear and have close-ups on both hands. It's just like a private lesson! I can rewind the videos as many times as I want without worrying about missing or forgetting any part of a lesson. Also, it's way cheaper than private lessons which would cost me about at least $ 30 to $ 40 per hour. If there were 4 hour lessons per month I would have to pay at least $ 120 to $ 160 per month excluding materials and registration fees. With online lessons, I can pace myself, giving myself as much or as little time as I need to complete the lesson. Another good thing is, I can learn from the comfort of my own home.

Classical Guitar is the Perfect Instrument for a Child to Learn

There is no arguing with the fact that teaching a child to learn an instrument is something that can potentially bring him or her a lifetime of joy and enrichment. But keeping a child interested in practicing can be a challenge. Among all the instruments that a child can learn how to play the classical guitar is among the best. Here are the reasons.

The classical guitar takes advantage of the allure of the rock star. Every child is familiar with pop music and every child who is interested in playing an instrument would probably take very quickly to playing the guitar. Any child would be quick to brag to his or her friends that he is learning to play the guitar. It is a highly romanticized instrument and this is what I call the allure of the Rock Star. You can take advantage of this attraction to popular music by teaching a child to play classical guitar.

Playing classical guitar is a bit different than playing pop and rock but there are some distinct advantages to classical guitar. The child will learn the fundamentals of sound music theory and will focus on learning how to read sheet music. Along the way the child will learn the basics of classical music.

But he or she will not lose interest in playing because while the classical guitar is a good instrument for learning theory, history, ability, and classical music, it is also an instrument that offers an incredible range of pieces to play in many genres. With the ability to play classical guitar comes the ability to play in every other genre that the guitar is played in. He or she will be able to play pop, rock, easy listening, country, jazz, blues, or any other type of music where a guitar is used. It is because of this wide variety of music that will be available to the student that he or she will be much more prone to continue practicing and continue playing. And this is another great reason why the classical guitar will bring a lifetime of enjoyment and enrichment. As the child grows and his musical tastes change the guitar can be right there through all the changes.

There are also some very pragmatic reasons for the classical guitar

Portability: The classical guitar is something that can be carried to and from lessons and to and from a friend’s house. Classical Guitars are also made in half size and three quarter size which gives young children the ability to play on an instrument more suited for their small hands.

Expense: professional guitars can be very expensive and run into the thousands of dollars but with the popularity of the guitar as an instrument there is a tremendous selection of inexpensive yet well made guitars. An adequate first guitar can usually be found in the fifty to a hundred dollar range.

Quiet Instrument: the classical guitar is an instrument that can be played in a room without the music being intrusive to other people in the house.

What if there is no classical guitar instructor in your town or city?

Upon the surface or during an initial look this may be true; there may be no official classical guitar instructors available to you but there is no doubt a large list of teachers who teach rock guitar. And one thing about the genre of rock and rock guitarists is that they have a reverence for classical guitarists because classical guitarists are renowned for their technical ability -classical guitarists are simply great guitarists and any rock guitarist can probably name his favorite classical guitarists.

To overcome the lack of an official classical guitar instructor you can simply ask rock guitar instructors if they are willing to take on a child that wants to learn classical guitar. Many of them will jump at the chance because it will also broaden their horizons and musical ability.

But there is one question you should ask any potential rock guitar instructor. Make sure that he or she can read sheet music reasonably well. This is of paramount importance for learning classical guitar. Some instructors may not fit this requirement because rock guitarists often learn their craft through ear training and using tablature, which is a notation form of music. This type of instructor wouldn’t be suitable for a student of classical guitar.

The classical guitar sometimes has the reputation of being a bit of a high-class instrument. But it is an instrument that crosses all genres of music and if you are considering the classical guitar for your child I applaud your decision. It is an instrument that can bring him or her a lifetime of musical enrichment and enjoyment.

For example, if you are a beginner, there is little reason to consider investing several thousands of dollars into a pro level guitar such as a custom Les Paul or a Paul Reed Smith. Another example regarding a specific application would be if you are a traveling musician. Traveling guitarists may want to consider a slightly less expensive guitar to take on the road while saving their finest instrument for a studio environment. Regardless of your situation or the application, the bottom line is there are several factors to consider. Understanding your position as a potential guitar buyer will help you make the right decision and ensure that you make an informed purchase.

Here are 5 tips to help you in choosing the right electric guitar.

Tip 1. Evaluate your level of committment to the instrument and the art of music.

Before you choose your electric guitar be sure you understand the level of committment that you are prepared to invest into the instrument. Electric guitars can be expensive and understanding the level of dedication you plan to invest in the instrument should play a vital role in choosing your guitar.

Tip 2. Identify your particular application for the instrument.

If you are a beginner and just learning to play the instrument, your application will be quite different from an intermediate or advanced guitarist who is adding to their collection. Determine your particular situation and application for the guitar you will purchase. Consider whether or not you will be keeping the instrument at home or frequently traveling with it. For example, if you plan to keep the instrument at home for recreational use, you may want to consider including a less expensive case for the guitar. Road cases can be costly and will not be neccesary if you do not travel with the guitar.

Tip 3. Identify your budget and include patience regarding your guitar purchase.

Many aspiring guitarists have wandered into the local music store only to be overwhelmed by the vast choices and different price ranges of guitars. As with any purchase, pre-planning and understanding your budget is critical. Prices for electric guitars range from a few hunderd dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. If you are serious about playing the guitar, selecting your instrument will be one of the most important decisions you make. Be sure to take ample time during this stage of the process. Patience is more than a virtue when selecting your guitar.

Tip 4. Consult a professional to get tips on guitar quality and performance.

It is a good idea to take the time to visit several musical instrument dealers in your area. Retail guitar shops will be more than happy to help you understand what to look for when buying an electric guitar. Get several opinions if you are new to guitars. Most guitar outlets will have seasoned players on staff who will be happy to impart their experience and wisdom. Ask questions. Find out what you need to consider when selecting an electric guitar. Getting several opinions in this area will shed light on the overall picture and will be very beneficial information when it comes time to buy.

Tip 5. Include additional items and training resources to help you get started playing the guitar.

Once you have made the right guitar purchase, be sure to have additional items on hand that will be vital to the process of learning. You will need an extra set of guitar strings, some extra picks, a tuner and a stand for your guitar. It is also very important to purchase some beginner books that include chord charts, guitar tab and chord progression exercises.
